FREDERICTON, NB - The UNB Reds are set to host the inaugural ACBA Championship this weekend with the league's top four teams all vying for the title.
The league-leading Holland Hurricanes enter the Championship with a 14-2 record (won-lost) and carry a five-game winning streak.
The Acadia Axemen (12-4) are the second place finishers through regular season play, and boast the league's top offense - averaging 9.44 runs per game.
The St. Mary's Huskies (8-8) secured the third seed with a victory over Dalhousie on the final day of the season.
The host Reds will look to use home-field advantage to win the Championship on home soil. UNB earned the fourth spot in the tournament with a 7-9 record.
The Championship will open Friday October 11th with the Holland Hurricanes and the Acadia Axemen squaring off at 4:00 PM. The UNB Reds will then host the SMU Huskies at 7:00 PM. Both games will be played at Royals Field in Fredericton.
Saturday will be highlighted by the ACBA Championship Awards Breakfast, 8:30 AM at the UNB Fredericton Campus. The following awards will be presented:
- Top Pitcher
- Top Hitter
- Top Defensive Player
- Rookie of the Year
- RBI Leader
- Runs Leader
- Stolen Bases Leader
- Home Runs Leader
- Earned Runs Average Leader
- Strikeouts Leader
- All-Conference Team
At noon, the teams will play concurrently with the Hurricanes taking on the Huskies at Thompson Field, while UNB will face the Axemen on Royals Field. At 4:00 PM, the Axemen will rebound for a matchup with SMU, and the Reds will host the Hurricanes at 7:00 PM in the last round-robin game of the Championship.
On Championship Sunday, the top two teams through round-robin play will square off for the first ever ACBA Championship title.
